  • Project Overview

  • Prince Charles House comprises of 31 eco friendly apartments for older residents in the heart of St Austell, together with communal facilities for the wider neighbourhood.

It replaced a 50-year-old building that had reached the end of its life and could no longer offer supported residents suitable accommodation.

Built using the latest green technology and to an innovative design by PRP Architects, the £5.9 million project was part funded by a £3.5 million grant from the Cornwall Council Eco-Communities fund, set up to showcase examples of low carbon living in the area.

  • Timescale

  • The old building was demolished in December 2010 and the new Prince Charles House completed in April 2012.

Premiere provided the kitchens for the 31 apartments plus the units for the community facilities.

These were all delivered to site during December 2011 and January 2012.

  • Awards

  • Prince Charles House was chosen as one of the top 50 UK Affordable Housing Developments of 2012

  • A total of 146,420 homes were completed in the UK last year - of these 36,900 were built by housing associations or councils, according to government statistics. That means, at the very least, a quarter of all new homes which families moved into in 2012 were sub-market rent or ‘affordable’ properties.

“Projects totalling more than 6,000 homes were entered, so choosing just 50 schemes was no mean feat.”

“affordable housing developers were set a rigorous task in compiling their entries, so to have made the top 50 is an achievement of which social landlords and their partners should rightly be proud.”

    Stuart Macdonald, editor, Inside Housing
Andy Rose, chief executive, Homes and Communities Agency

  • The development has also been awarded a BREEAM Outstanding environmental rating. This award not only recognises the design, construction and materials used to create the building, but also the opportunities that it gives residents to lower their carbon footprint.
